Colonel Robert Hines

In September 2010, Early Rodders, our local Saturday morning cars and coffee group, lost a friend.

Bob Hines was very well-known in the Southern California car enthusiast community.
He had a stable of fast Mercedes including a ’56 300SL and several gray market AMGs.
And only a few weeks ago, after months of waiting (not very patiently) he took delivery of a new SLS.

Whenever I saw Bob at local events, he drew a crowd…it seemed that everyone knew him.

Bob was a highly-decorated Air Force colonel. His career included
flying the most advanced aircraft from WWII through Vietnam.

The Saturday after Bob’s passing, some of his friends brought out his collection, as well as some great photos.

Colonel Bob will be missed.

Motor4Toys, December 5

There's always an incredible assortment of cars at the Motor4Toys annual toy drive.

Woodland Hills, November 28

Just a few of the beauties at Supercar Sunday this month (British Car day).

LA Auto Show, November 25

Thanksgiving morning turned out to be a good time to visit the auto show.

Best of France and Italy - November 7

This annual show at Woodley Park always has a spectacular assortment of rare and beautiful cars.

Miatafest - July 17, 2010

to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Miata the folks at Mazda put on a fabulous event
at their R&D facility in Irvine, California.

It was very neat meeting (and chatting with) Tom Matano, Mark Jordan and Bob Hall at the birthplace of the Miata!

(Doesn't Bob Hall look like Batai from Star Trek?)

This is a prototype for the second generation Miata (NB). It's based on, and  uses many components from, the NA.

Hundreds of Miatas...and Miata enthusiasts! Here are just a few pics.

July 1989 / July 2010
The pic on the left was taken on the day the Miata went on sale back in 1989.
When I saw the beautiful blue original Miata, I couldn't resist posing for a similar shot.

Many great photos of the event can be found at Mark Booth's web site, The Photo Booth.

Cars and Coffee, Irvine - July 17

I've been hearing about the Saturday morning Cars and Coffee in Irvine for years, but because of the distance,
have never been down there. Since I was going to attend Miatafest (see above) later on this morning (about 10 minutes away),
I thought I'd stop by and check it out. It was worth it.

A real D-Type Jaguar...

and a Jaguar Works factory lightweight E-Type...wow!

More wow!

Various vehicles from miscellaneous meets during the second half of 2010 (in no particular order)

The Early Rodders Poker Run ended at Bob Smith Toyota,
where I got my MR2 in 1996!

With my cast finally removed, I can finally
drive a stick shift again. More details here.

home of Autobooks

My friend Jo has got a nice stable - and even one for Roxie!

Bob not-so-patiently awaits delivery of "his" SLS.

A stunning, museum-quality 1949 Alfa...very rare.

A couple of great looking GTOs (a '66 and a '65) and a street-legal sprint car!
